Bengaluru: The threat of a Zika virus outbreak is rising in Bengaluru as the city’s weather conditions fluctuate. A recent fatality in Shivamogga has heightened concerns after a senior citizen succumbed to the virus. So far, nine cases have been reported across Karnataka, with the highest number of cases emerging in Bengaluru, prompting the health department to take urgent action.

The department is particularly focused on monitoring pregnant women, who are at greater risk. In response, a separate screening system has been established. In Bengaluru’s Jigani area, six individuals, including a pregnant woman, have tested positive for Zika. While two of them have recovered, four others, including three pregnant women, are still undergoing treatment.

Health Minister has issued a warning, advising extra caution, especially for pregnant women, due to the potential impact of the virus on fetal brain development. The department is also preparing to implement additional screening measures for pregnant women across the city.
